Greta Gustafsson was born in Stockholm on 18.9.1905 as the last child of Anna Lovisa and Karl Alfred Gustafsson.
Greta originated on her mothers side from the noble family Sabelskjöld.
After compulsory school she worked as a soap-girl in a barber´s shop and then as a salesclerk at the department store PUB in Stockholm.
Her film-career began with some advertising films, followed by a first real part in "Peter the Vagabond" in 1922. Mauritz Stiller discovered her talent and gave her the principal part in " The Gosta Berling's Saga" (1924).
Later both Stiller and Garbo became alive to Louis B. Mayer from the MGM, Hollywood and MGM-contracts were signed.
During her film-career Garbo took part in 27 films and except one single case she was greatly praised. The change-over to the sound rather strengthened her star-status as her some hoarse voice gave further fuel to the growing Garbo-fever and to her mystery.
Greta Garbo died in New York on 15.4.1990. The internment took place at the Skogskyrkogarden cemetary in Stockholm on 16.6.1999.
